What is an age calculator and why is the math harder than it looks?

An age calculator looks like a simple subtraction problem, but anyone who has tried to compute their exact age has discovered that calendars are messy. Months range from 28 to 31 days. Every fourth year — except every hundredth, except every four-hundredth — adds a leap day. Time zones quietly change the answer if your birthday rolls past midnight. Subtracting one date from another the naïve way produces a number of seconds, which is correct but not particularly readable. Translating that into "I am 32 years, 4 months and 11 days old" is what people actually mean when they ask for their age.
